Active Winter

Peaceful paths and nifty pistes

Wooden huts groaning under the burden of heavy snow. Crackling fires, snow flurries, Christmas tree decorations. Fun on the piste, woollen scarves and white woodland. Where would we be without these winter and Christmas clichés?

Thick blankets and strong mulled wine warm limbs and spirits. For there's no dimly lit 'Stube' or open fire that will keep winter sports fans from getting out into the fresh mountain snow. After a long winter's walk and an action-packed day's skiing it's time to take a rest and get warm, turning faces towards the winter sun to get a chic winter tan.
ALPIANA – green luxury Dolce Vita Hotel in Völlan sees a lot of snowfall in winter and it's not just the mountains in nearby Ulten-Deutschnonsberg that are enshrouded in a thick white blanket; snow falls as far down as the Etsch river valley and sprinkles the roofs of Lana and the spa town of Meran with a light dusting of sugar. In Meraner Land winter is as it should be.

Snowshoeing through silent trails

A view of woodland braving the weight of snow, a glance up to the mountains with their various white winter mantles. The magic of a South Tyrolean winter can be better grasped once away from the pistes. Nature lovers can go walking in winter too, whether on snow shoes or in waterproof hiking boots. Reading animal tracks, pouring hot tea from a thermos flask, catching sight of your own breath in the crisp, clear air, discovering tiny crystals in the snow.

A serious matter

Lana is the native village of the Olympic luge medal holder, Armin Zöggeler. While in other parts sledging may be a 'nice change from a day on the slopes', here it is a serious business. The well prepared piste at Vigiljoch sees even the kids expertly handling the bends in order not to lose their momentum. After 2 kilometres they arrive at the finish with red noses and waving their caps, shouting “More!” even before they come to a stop.
