A unique and lasting experience

Travel means getting to know a place with all your senses, gathering experiences and impressions that are a bit different from the norm. Travel means understanding old things and learning new ones, grasping a culture in its entirety. Travel means recognising what is truly special and taking time to stop and stare.

Around the DolceVita Hotel in Meraner Land travel means living the harmony between north and south – a piece of the Mediterranean in the Alps. Here, travel means coming across stone testaments to history in the form of churches, fortresses, castle and country houses. In Meraner Land travel means seeing a variety of flora, whether hiking in the mountains, strolling down the spa promenades in Meran or visiting wonderfully landscaped gardens. Travel means delving into a chequered past and learning about history and art in South Tyrol's famous museums.

Yet, above all, travel in Meraner Land means being where two different languages, two cultures and two culinary traditions neatly collide right in the midst of the mountains of South Tyrol.

Famous museums in the area

The oldest 'Südtiroler' may be found at the Museum of Archaeology in the nearby provincial capital of Bozen-Bolzano. Ötzi the iceman is over 5,200 years old and receives hundreds of visitors a day. Another famous South Tyrolean is the mountaineer Reinhold Messner, whose 'Messner Mountain Museums' include MMM Firmian, MMM Juval, MMM Dolomites, MMM Ortles and MMM Mountain Peoples. Those into more contemporary themes will enjoy 'Museion' in Bozen, which displays and collects modern art in an interdisciplinary and innovative manner. Museums in South Tyrol – not just for rainy days.

The surrounding castles and fortresses

Mayenburg fortress at the entrance to Völlan adorns the low mountains around Tisens, Schloss Lebenberg perches on a moraine hill near Marling, and Schloss Tirol is a particularly famous construction on the other side of the Meran basin near Dorf Tirol. Traces of the Middle Ages may be felt all over Meraner Land, as its traditional name of 'Burggrafenamt' suggests.

The gardens and Trauttmansdorff Castle

This is a must for all those spending their holiday in Meran and the surrounding area at ALPIANA – green luxury Dolce Vita Hotel. A wide variety of plants from all over the world blossom and thrive in the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in over 80 gardens. Imposing themed gardens, ponds and artist pavilions stretching over an area of 12 hectares offer treats for the senses. 'Touriseum' is housed within the castle itself. This province museum on the subject of tourism imaginatively recounts 200 years of tourism history in Tirol and Meran.
